Work Begins to Build Japan’s New National Stadium in Tokyo

Japan Sports Council broke ground on December 11 in Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo to build the New National Stadium, the main venue for Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. The ceremony was held on the day with attendance of leaders of the government and officials including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Olympics Minister Tamayo Marukawa and Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. The design and construction work has been commissioned to a joint venture of Taisei, Azusa Sekkei and architect Kengo Kuma.

Japan’s YKK Group Completes 2nd Phase of Environment-Friendly Housing Project in Toyama Prefecture

Japanese zipper and building material maker YKK Group has been developing the 3.2ha land in Kurobe City, Toyama Prefecture into a renewable energy-introduced community, “Passive Town”. Followed by the first phase of 36 units opening in February, the company completed the 44 unit second phase in November that was designed by renowned architect Fumihiko Maki and constructed by Toda Corp.

Sekisui House To Build Japan’s First Zero Energy Apartment in Nagoya City

Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei Awarded Contract to Design Headquarters of Chinese Tech Giant Alibaba’s Affiliate in Hangzhou

Japanese architectural firm Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei has been awarded a contract to design headquarters of Ant Financial Service, the financial arm of Chinese Tech Giant Alibaba Group in Hangzhou. In the 88,500m2 plot beside West Lake, part of the parent company’s headquarters campus, ten-story buildings of 310,000m2 total floor area will be constructed with completion due in 2019.

Architect Kengo Kuma Explains Design of Japan’s New National Stadium

New renderings of the New National Stadium to be built in Tokyo were revealed on October 28 at the press conference held by the Japan Sports Council. The main venue of the 2020 Olympic Games will have a concept of the stadium of woods connecting sports and green of the neighboring Meiji Jingu Gaien. Interior of the facility will introduce Japanese traditional designs, while timber structure integrating with green will represent the unique exterior.

ACI 318-14: Reorganized for design and Use of HPFRC in design

On 1st November, at National University of Civil Engineering, Professor James K.Wight of Department of Civil Engineering from University of Michigan had a presentation on the reorganization for design of Building code requirements for Structural Concrete ACI 318-14 and Use of high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete in design of shear wall coupling beams for earthquake resistance.
